Under the Sea: Books Featuring Mermaids

mermaid.png

A couple of months ago I did a post on books which featured unicorns because the unicorn is my countries national animal (I know, right?!). It was a lot of fun and got me thinking about what other underrepresented magical and mythical creatures I’d like to see more of in my reading. Until relatively recently I’d definitely have put mermaids alongside unicorns – sort of a ubiquitous symbol of the fantasy genre, but not something that actually appears in a lot of stories. The past 18-ish or so months have seen mermaids become a bit of a trend though, so there were more to pick from than I’d thought.

Have you read any of these books? Do you enjoy stories about mermaids and underwater adventures?

Let me know if there are any other underappreciated creatures you’d like to see more of in your reading.

Nineworlds Homework: Day Three

This the third part of my Ninewords 2018 wrap-up — Day One is here, and Day Two here if you’re interested. As I’ve said before, this isn’t a full wrap up of my weekend at the convention or a detailed summary of the panels [more organised people than I am have been doing blogs and Twitter threads for that].

nineworlds

I thought I would share the notes I did take. Basically it’s a massive To Be Read/ To Be Watched/ To Be Checked Out media list from some of the panels I attended. Not all of these were actually recs from the panellists, some were things just mentioned in passing that caught my interest but it should keep me (and, if you want, you) busy for some time.

Recs which I have read/seen and would second are marked with an asterisk (which link to my review if I have one.)

This the second part of my Ninewords 2018 wrap-up — Day One is here if you’re interested. As I said last time, this isn’t a full wrap up of my weekend at the convention or a detailed summary of the panels [more organised people than I am have been doing blogs and Twitter threads for that].

Nineworlds Homework: Day One

nineworlds

I spent last weekend at the Nineworlds 2018 convention in London. I can’t even explain how much fun I had. I’ve been going to cons for about 8 years now, and this one was honestly the best and most inclusive I’ve seen. I can’t believe I didn’t find out about it sooner!

Anyway, lots of people more organised and capable than I have been live-tweeting panels and writing up summaries to spread the love to anyone who either couldn’t attend or, like me, wanted to see all the panels but couldn’t be in two places at once.

While I can’t offer you that, I thought I would share the notes I did take. Basically it’s a massive To Be Read/ To Be Watched/ To Be Checked Out media list from some of the panels I attended. Not all of these were actually recs from the panellists, some were things just mentioned in passing that caught my interest but it should keep me (and, if you want, you) busy for some time.

Birthday Post: Bi-Girls in SFF

bigirls.png

I’m a terrible blogger! I completely missed my first anniversary this month! I thought it was in July? Doh!

Anyway, to mark that, along with it being the last few days of Pride month and the fact that today is my birthday(!) here’s a very self-indulgent post.

I want to read more books with bisexual protagonists/ significant characters… but I’m not that keen on contemporary fiction, which is where it seems most common (although common is a bit misleading).

So here’s a list of bisexual girls in SFF. It’s by no means comprehensive. I’ve marked any that I’ve already read/ reviewed but the rest aren’t necessarily recs. Most are my TBR, but hopefully, by this time next year, I’ll be able to tick a lot of them off.  🙂
