April 28:Β Books I Wish I Had Read As a Child

Some of these are books that everyone else seems to have read back in school, they;re ones I sort of wish I’d been forced to read because I don’t have any particular interest in the story but want to know what everyone’s talking about. Some are YA books that I missed while they were hugely popular, and again, I don’t really care to read, but I feel like I’m missing out on references sometimes.

Does any of that make sense?

I wish I’d studied these in school…

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great Gatsby

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird (To Kill a Mockingbird, #1)

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

The Catcher in the Rye

I wish I’d read these when they were popular…

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)

The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection (The Selection, #1)

I wish I’d read these when I was young enough to really appreciate them…

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

  1. I really wish I’d read Bridge to Terabithia when I was younger too! I used to love the movie and I’m sure I would have loved the book too

  2. Great list! I know exactly what you mean – there are some books I’m not all that interested in, but I wish I’d read them so I understood everyone else’s references.

God I did study The Great Gatsby in school and it’s my least favourite book EVER, so I’m quite jealous that it wasn’t inflicted on you!

I think I’d be the same if I did read it. It really doesn’t appeal but sometimes I feel I’m missing out culturally lol like when everyone joked about Gatsby parties at the start of the year. πŸ˜…

  3. I haven’t read To Kill A Mockingbird and feel the same way! The Shatter Me series is really good if you stop at book 3!! Also, The Selection is becoming a Netflix movie.. you can kinda get it that way, if you watch. πŸ™‚

  4. I do know what you mean! I read Bridge to Terabithia when I was a kid, and it broke me. (Not permanently, nor in a bad way really. But it was the first book that I remember reading with that much emotional impact.)

I read To Kill A Mockingbird a year or two ago, and I was incredibly indifferent to it. I suspect I would have had a much more enjoyable experience if I had read it in school where we studied it.
