All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.
Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.
As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.
REASONS I’M EXCITED FOR SORCERY OF THORNS
THE COVER! That illustration is absolutely beautiful! What an artist!
The writing. I thought Margaret Rogerson’s writing in An Enchantment of Raven was beautiful, even if the romance didn’t quite work for me. I’m keen to try her work again.
“Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries”. Orphans? Living in libraries? Gimme, gimme, gimme!
WWW WEDNESDAYS
What are you currently reading?
Hardback: A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes (for #for #OWLsReadathon2019 Charms prompt and AvengersReadathon19 Captain America: WWII prompt).
Audiobook: Still Star-Crossed by Melinda Taub (for #OWLsReadathon2019 Astronomy prompt and Cornerfolds’ Retelling Bingo)
What did you recently finish reading? Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett. I really enjoyed this one but it’s pretty short. I gave it 3.5 stars on finishing but I might up it to 4 by the time I write my review. I’m still on the fence. Does anyone else obsessive about really inconsequential differences in ratings, or is it just me?
What do you think you’ll read next? I’ve really no idea. I only just started A Thousand Ships so I’ll be busy with that for at least a few days. I might go for Extinction Trials: Exile next, cause I think it’ll be a fast, fun read.
I’ve seen this book before, and I think I might be interested.

I’ve weaned myself off giving half star ratings as I had to decide whether to round up or down when posting my reviews to Goodreads and Amazon anyway. It was difficult to begin with but I’m used to it now and probably giving more three star ratings as a result, I.e. good but nothing special.

I get this! I feel like there’s a huge different between a 3 and a four. I think that’s why I use 3.5 as my comfort blanket. 🙂

I just read An Enchantment of Ravens in March and I felt very similar to you. Sorcery of Thorns definitely sounds pretty epic, though! I think I might have to check it out.

I absolutely agree with you on An Enchantment of Ravens, her prose is beautiful – but the romance shadowed everything in the book. Still, Sorcery of Thorns is on my TBR list and I can’t wait for release day 🙂 x

I had the same problem with the romance in AEoR, but I’m hoping this one will be a little more balanced. 🙂

I hate doing the stars on Goodreads and I cannot bring myself to use them on my site because they make me mentally exhausted!! However, I AM loving the OWL Readathon. What is the Avengers Readathon? That sounds like so much fun! Here is my WWW: https://silverbuttonbooks.com/2019/04/17/www-wednesday-april-17-2019/

It’s actually a little similar to the OWLs. You pick a character (I went with Cap) and there’s a profile with 5-8 prompts to ‘achieve’ that character.

I’m definitely looking forward to Sorcery of Thorns, too! I think it’s hard for bookworms to resist the idea of growing up in a library, because I’m pretty sure, for at least 99% of us, that’s our dream. xD
I’m definitely obsessive over ratings, too, so you’re not alone in that. I’m always worried about misrepresenting myself. xD Like if I rate something a three because I didn’t personally enjoy the writing but did like the plot … is that going to discourage people from reading it more than if I had given it a four?! The struggle is real!

The struggle is definitely real! especially because different people have a different scale for what’s good/bad etc. My 3 might be really different to someone elses!

That’s true, too. For me, anything 3 and up is a book I’d gladly recommend. 2 is a book that I think might appeal to a niche group of people (of which I am clearly not one, but whom I’d recommend it for anyway). It’s really only a 1 or a DNF that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. xD And I don’t think that’s how most people do their rating system.
We should have a chart like the doctors have for kids, where you can just judge it with smiley faces based on how it made you feel. xD
