A Local Habitation (October Daye, #2)A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. We share the first sentence and whatever thoughts of impressions it provokes. For the Friday 56, hosted by Freda’s Voice, we share a few lines from either page 56 or 56%.

Opening Line:

The last train out of San Francisco leaves at midnight; miss it and you’re stuck unitl morning.

Page 56:

Jan watched intently, nostrils flaring as she sniffed at the air. Then she grinned. If her smile was bright before, it was nothing compared to the way she lit up now. It was like looking at the sun.

Book Summary:

October “Toby” Daye is a changeling, the daughter of Amandine of the fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she is gifted in blood magic, able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of blood. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she re-earns that position every day, undertaking assignments for her liege, Sylvester, the Duke of the Shadowed Hills.

Now Sylvester has asked her to go to the County of Tamed Lightning—otherwise known as Fremont, CA—to make sure that all is well with his niece, Countess January O’Leary, whom he has not been able to contact. It seems like a simple enough assignment—but when dealing with the realm of Faerie nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Toby soon discovers that someone has begun murdering people close to January, whose domain is a buffer between Sylvester’s realm and a scheming rival duchy. If Toby can’t find the killer soon, she may well become the next victim.

8th – 14th – Do you have celebrations for your blog’s anniversary such as a giveaway? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews)

I have in the past. It’s due in June, I think. I’ve done giveaways for the blog’s anniversary, my own birthday, the end of my readathons and a couple that were just books I was excited to share.

    1. The size of the series is pretty intimidating! But, like you, I’ve read a good number of her other books and enjoyed them all, so I decided to just really go for it 🙂

  1. I want to read everything Seanan McGuire has written. I haven’t yet read any of her books in this series though.

I do not really celebrate my blog’s anniversary, mentioning it if I remember. I did have two giveaways in honor of it over the years. Like you, I have held giveaways on other occcasions as well.

I hope you have a great weekend! Happy Reading!

    1. The first one was really good too. There were a lot of things I’m hoping with get developed in the rest of it. If you do decide to pick it up, you’re very welcome to join in our monthly Twitter chats 😉
