King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1)Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.

WHY I’M EXCITED FOR KING OF SCARS

  • Leigh Bardugo. I really enjoyed The Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows, I’ve not read her other books, but I’ve not read anything I didn’t like.
  • Nikolai. I think like a lot of people who read the Grisha books, Nikolai was one of my favourite characters. I’m so excited for him to take the lead.
  • Rivka. I’m really excited to see more of the world and the culture as Nikolai goes on his journey. I’ve not read The Language of Thorns yet, but this seems like a great extension to the development of the culture etc. that that hinted at.

  1. Ah man, I need to get around to reading some Leigh Bardugo because everyone is always talking about how amazing her books are. I did start Six of Crows at one point but had to return it to the library before I was finished. Do you think I could start there or should I read the Grisha trilogy first?

Here’s my WWW for this week.

    1. I’ve still to read Crooked Kingdom if that’s any consolation XD
I think it depends what you like, as either can be read as a standalone. I’d say the Grisha books are more you’re traditional YA fantasy — chosen one, magic training/school etc. They reminded me a bit of Tamora Pierce and the like? Six of Crows felt more like Urban Fantasy, a bit like Lies of Locke Lamora or the Dresden Files.

  2. Someday *sigh* maybe I’ll read Bardugo. 🙂

THose Christmas cozies sound fun. I think I’ve looked at Rest Ye Murdered gentlemen before. I need to pick out some Christmas stuff ASAP for the HoHoHo readathon.

    1. HAH! I still really need to read Crooked Kingdom. The hype put me off for a while.
I don’t know what it is at the moment, I’m so into Christmas books? I’ll have completely gone off it by the time it comes around!

      1. Same here I think with the hype? I got Crooked Kingdom in a giveaway but didn’t have Six of Crows (I’ve since bought it on Kindle) but it was SO hyped that I kinda didn’t want to read it? Haha I really should though. And yes the Christmas reads- I have to find some but I’ll probably be over them by the time the readathon is over. 🙂

  3. Bardugo is a TERRIFIC writer! I’ve only read the first book of the Grisha Verse series, “Shadow and Bone”. Just from that one book, I have made her a favorite author! However, I must confess that I did not finish “The Language of Thorns”. It was just too dark for me. I would still like to read “King of Scars” though, because it’s in the Grisha world!

Thanks for sharing! Thanks as well for commenting on my “Can’t Wait Wednesday” post!! ❤ 🙂
