Damsel by Elana K. Arnold
Expected Publication: October 2nd 2018
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy
Pages: 256
The rite has existed for as long as anyone can remember: when the prince-who-will-be-king comes of age, he must venture out into the gray lands, slay a fierce dragon, and rescue a damsel to be his bride. This is the way things have always been.
When Ama wakes in the arms of Prince Emory, however, she knows none of this. She has no memory of what came before she was captured by the dragon, or what horrors she has faced in its lair. She knows only this handsome prince, the story he tells of her rescue, and her destiny to sit on the throne beside him. Ama comes with Emory back to the kingdom of Harding, hailed as the new princess, welcomed to the court.
However, as soon as her first night falls, she begins to realize that not all is as it seems, that there is more to the legends of the dragons and the damsels than anyone knows–and that the greatest threats to her life may not be behind her, but here, in front of her.
3 REASONS I’M EXCITED FOR DAMSEL
- That cover! No surprise, right? But I love the flowers and red-hot text. I think it’s going to be beautiful on the physical copy.
- Retelling? I don’t want to know too much going into it, but I think this is a dark Sleeping Beauty retelling.
- So intriguing. This line in the summary really caught my attention, “as soon as her first night falls, she begins to realize that not all is as it seems”.
WWW WEDNESDAYS
What are you currently reading?
Paperback: Stolen Songbird (The Malediction Trilogy, #1) by Danielle L. Jensen
Audiobook: Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2) by Robin LaFevers
What did you recently finish reading?
Pantomime (Micah Grey, #1) Laura Lam. I’m hovering between a 3.5 and a 4 rating, but I really enjoyed it. I’ve put a hold on the next two books from the library.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m pretty close to finishing Dark Triumph so I’ll probably start the third book, Mortal Heart, next.
I agree with you on the retelling of Sleeping Beauty and it seems what happens after (which is something Disney doesn’t really do) so I am intrigued to see how it will turn out! Have you read All the Ever Afters by Danielle Teller? It was such an interesting retelling of Cinderella told by the Stepmother!

Funnily enough, I think I just added All the Ever Afters to my TBR a week or so ago? It looks really original, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that angle before. Thanks for the rec, I have to see if I can find a copy soon! ☺

I actually just finished Dark Triumph, and I think I prefered it to the first one. It felt more coherent and smoother plot wise? If you do go back to the series, I hope you enjoy it.
