Seventeen-year-old Stella Ainsley wants just one thing: to go somewhere—anywhere—else. Her home is a floundering spaceship that offers few prospects, having been orbiting an ice-encased Earth for two hundred years. When a private ship hires her as a governess, Stella jumps at the chance. The captain of the Rochester, nineteen-year-old Hugo Fairfax, is notorious throughout the fleet for being a moody recluse and a drunk. But with Stella he’s kind.
But the Rochester harbors secrets: Stella is certain someone is trying to kill Hugo, and the more she discovers, the more questions she has about his role in a conspiracy threatening the fleet.
3 REASONS I’M EXCITED FOR BRIGHTLY BURNING
- It’s a Jane Eyre retelling. Jane Eyre is one of my favourite classics. I love the Gothic atmosphere and can’t wait to see how this translates to a YA novel.
- It’s a science fiction Jane Eyre retelling. 2018 really seems to be the year for sci-fi, and specifically spaceship sci-fi, in YA. As a massive Star Trek and Firefly fan, I’ve been looking for this sort of thing for ages. It’s seems to have taken a while for this to move over into YA, so I’ll be excited about these space settings for a good while yet.
- I love Alexa Donne’s YouTube channel. Not only is she a lovely person, she really seems to know what she’s taking about in her writing advice videos, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing her writing up close.
I’m looking forward to this book as well!! Unfortunately I was denied on NetGalley for the ARC 😦 But I hope I’ll get to read it soon!

Me too! I’ve requested it every way I can think off, but no luck. It’s probably my most anticipated debut of the year.
