NaNoWriMo 2017

NaNoWriMo 2017 Participant Banner

It’s almost here! NaNoWriMo is on the horizon.

My NaNo project this year is a viking-inspired Cinderella retelling so I’ve decided to share some of my favourite retellings below. You should definitely check them out.

I’m super excited to take part this year. I didn’t win last year — I hit about 35,000 — but I’ve done a lot more planning this time around. Last year, I came up with my idea on October 31, and although I’ve now finished that story, there were a lot of dark moments and backtracking.

This year, I spent a lot of time on YouTube watching Preptober videos and have built myself a pretty good plot outline. I still wouldn’t call myself a ‘planner’ but I’ve given myself more support this time around. If you’d like to see (or use) the outline template I made for myself, you can download the blank version here.

Anyway, you might notice this blog getting a little quieter this month, but I do have some posts pre-scheduled, so it shouldn’t go completely dead.

In the meantime, are you participating in NaNoWriMo this year? What project do you have planned? If you’d like to add me as a buddy on the site you can do it here. I’ll also be on Twitter, although whether I’ll be doing writing sprints or procrastinating remains to be seen.

Some of my Favourite Retellings

Peter Pan — Peter DarlingPeter Darling // Austin Chant
Cinderella — Cinder // Marissa Meyer
The Iliad — The Song of Achilles // Madeline Miller
Cinderella — Shadows on the Moon // Zoë Marriott
The Little Mermaid — The Seafarer’s Kiss // Julia Ember
The Goose Girl — Thorn // Intisar Khanani

  1. Viking-inspired Cinderella retelling? I’m definitely intrigued and wish you all the best luck with your NaNo project! 🙂 I’m participating this year as well with an Urban Fantasy story about witches, which I’ll introduce next Wednesday. I’ve also added you to my buddy list on the NaNo website 🙂 (my username is Miss.Supernatural there)

  2. Ahhh your NaNo project sounds so good! This will be my first time participating in NaNoWriMo and I’m a bit nervous but also super excited! I was going to use October to prep and plot but so far I haven’t done a single thing 😂😂 I might as well just wing it XD Good luck with NaNo though ❤️

  4. I love how unique your story idea is! I can definitely agree that some planning is key to winning Nanowrimo. When I first trie participating in 2015, I barely got a sentence down, and I think part of it was disorganization and lax discipline when I came to writing. So many stories in my head, it’s all about getting them typed into my laptop! I wish you the best of luck this year!

    1. Thank you! I tried panting last year and really struggled after the first week. Maybe you could write your ideas up as novellas/ short stories to get them out your head, then develop out any you really love?
