Awesome Mothers in Fantasy Books
Ersel’s Mama – She supports Ersel’s dreams even though she’ll be left behind and might suffer for it. And then she’s super brave and puts everything on the line to save her.
The Sea-Farer’s Kiss by Julia Ember
Molly Weasley, Tonks, Lily Potter, Narcissa Malfoy – Really, need I say more? Even Petunia’s not a bad mum, just a terrible aunt. The only really awful mother I can think of in the series is in The Cursed Child, and I’m editing that out of my brain.
The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
Sally Jackson – Not only is she super supportive of Percy’s adventures, she puts up with so much to protect him beofore the series even starts.
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
Catelyn Stark‘s the obvious choice and I love her, but Cersei Lannister fits in here too. Yes, she’s a horrible person but you have to admit, she’d do anything for her kids.
A Song of Ice and Fire series by G. R. R. Martin
Minli’s Ma – Sure, she’s prickly at the start, but when Minli disappears off on her adventure, Ma and Ba go out on their own to look for her, and how often does that happen in MG books?
When the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Terrble Mothers in Fantasy Books
Both The Queen of Lormere and Twylla’s mother – Twylla’s mother is incredibly strict, willing to risk her youngest daughters life so as not to go against the god’s wishes. Prince Merek’s mother, the Queen, is even worse and has some pretty scary plans for holding onto power.
The Sin-Eaters Daughter by Melinda Salisbury
Idonia Pinketon, the Marchioness of Rock Turtle Cove – Maybe she’s not as bad as the others on this list, but she definitely puts her own ambitions before her daughter’s dreams and is constantly putting Cath down.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Keris Veturia – The Commandant has a really painful backstory, but she’s still an awful person and being her son doesn’t help Elias at all.
An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir
Mrs Wormwood – Was it any wonder Matilda wanted to go and live with Miss Honey?
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Suzume’s mother seems to almost forget all about her when she remarries, caring more about her new children and leaving Suzume to suffer under her new step-father’s rule.
Shadows on the Moon by Zoe Marriott
Yes to all those Harry Potter moms! Molly is the one that comes to mind as one of the first ones, but of course we can’t forget Lily, Tonks and even Narcissa as amazing moms! 🙂 And Sally Jackson is just amazing. Cersei is definitely a horrible person, but she does love her kids. And Keris is even more horrible.

Yeah, I think Molly is the most stereotypically mothering and the one that we see most through Harry’s eyes so is the most obvious choice, but they’re all great examples.

I ove how there sre so many strong mums in the HP series! I think Cersei’s maternal instinct is what makes her so interesting. She does terrible things but she loves her children.

Cersei’s love for her children definetly makes her harder to hate, and makes for a much more complicated character.

Great list! The Harry Potter series definitely has some awesome mother characters. I didn’t even think of Narcissa Malfoy, but she actually ends up being an incredibly important character at the end, and things might have gone quite differently if it weren’t for her!

Yep, I think she’s a good example of how different perspectives can totally change how you see someone.

Mallfoy’s Mom! Cool. Even though they are the ones you hate to love or love to hate, I always think Mallfoy’s Dad is totally hot. Not in real life–but with that perfect long, blonde hair.

Haha! I remember just thinking that in real life that hair must take hours to maintain and the Malfoys house must be a nightmare in the mornings. XD

All preening in front of the mirror! Happily for the actor it was a wig!

I should have added Tonks on my list! We don’t really get to see her as a mother, but she fought and died to make a better future for her son and others.

Yeah, I think she and Lily are obvious meant to mirror each other so it seemed unfair to leave her out.
